Six Things to Consider Before Leaving

Hey friend! I’ve been pretty loud about this topic of leaving your company for another opportunity. Do NOT call me old school. I understand you need to move around to get raises etc. However, some people make a jump before they need to so below are some things to think about before you find another opportunity! If you like these and feel your network could benefit from these, feel free to share my newsletter or invite folks to join!

  • The grass is not always greener — One of my favorite quotes I’ve heard recently is ‘The grass isn’t always greener on the other side, it’s just greener where you water it’ Think about that before you make a jump.
  • Know your BASE salary (plus Benefits, 401k, PTO, HSA, etc.) — so many folks make a jump and don’t realize they have it GOOD when it comes to benefits and PTO. You need to know these numbers and keep them somewhere.
  • Know YOUR worth — I used to be a big fan of doing market research and knowing what your skillset/years of experience demands in the market but after talking to some folks…don’t do that. You need to know what skillsets you are bringing to the table and tie them into the needs of the role.
  • What are the issues you are dealing with currently — What are the issues? Leadership? Money?
  • Can things change by addressing the issues with management — Are the issues actually changeable? Or is it deeply rooted in the organization?
  • Am I going to deal with this same problem at the next company — Let’s be honest, all companies have their issues. No company is perfect because they are led by people:)

I hope these bullet points made you think! If you need me, email me! taylor@vaco.com

I am also still looking for open source engineers of 3+ years of experience and up to $150k in salary. If this is you, let me know!!
